SKILLSET

I direct multi-cam shoots and develop innovative camera solutions to reveal animal behaviour in unprecedented ways. I always demonstrate a strong sense of character and narrative. And push boundaries wherever possible to get the shot. Even if it seems impossible on first glance.

Presenter-led

I love writing. I really enjoy the process of being part of a writers room to fully develop characters and place them in believable storylines. I have written for two comedy series and I enjoy the challenge of conveying factual content through the use of satire, surrealism and parody. I believe it is a really effective way of conveying factual material - it doesn't always have to have dry and ernest.

I also used to be a Government 'spin doctor' and speechwriter, so I'm equally adept when it comes to making complex factual content accessible, rousing, even gripping!

Development & Talent Scouting

I love an impossible talent brief and working to uncovering a new face who's a perfect fit!   I pride myself on discovering and working with some really exciting new talent and I get real satisfaction in nurturing them and introducing them to the world of TV.

Development is an equally inviting challenge. I enjoy the creative endeavour of pulling together a sizzle reel or pitch deck to sell a brilliant idea. I've landed commissions on funded development for several one-off docs and series (The Truth about Medicines, The Zoo, Animal Impossible, The Beach Live)

Edit Producing & Directing

I think collectively, I have spent years in those little dark rooms!

But, it has really developed both my directing and scripting. Once you have wrestled good, bad and ugly rushes into shape, you know the mistakes to avoid making in the field.

I'm in my element in the edit; I enjoy the intellectual challenge of pulling hours of footage into really special moments. Whether it is  scripting characters in natural history sequences - or drawing out narratives from hours of obs-doc actuality - I'm used to working with 100s of hours of footage!

A TV chameleon

I guess I am unusual (and fortunate) in that I have skipped between genres during my career. It appeals to my curious nature and has given me a broad range of experience which often benefits any project I apply my skills to - whether that's a technical challenge or pushing the boundaries of what's possible in storytelling.

A variety of habitats

I've worked on location across the globe, directing challenging shoots in remote environments; from the Australian Outback to the wilds of Yellowstone. I am experienced in table-top set work (in situ and in studios), macro filming, dive shoots, VFX capture, studio-lighting sets and live gallery producing with talk back. I'm happy in a studio with a plentiful craft service table but equally happy in the back of a Landrover with cold piece of toast!

I've summarised my skills below.

06

Tech Development & Knowledge

When it comes to the challenges of film making -  I enjoy immersing myself in the latest technology to find the best tools for visually striking sequences; whether it's capturing macro wildlife moments or large-scale, location-based action.

As well as being open to designing bespoke cameras for the job - I also shoot on various cameras including RED Raptor, Sony FX6, FX9, A7s. I can shoot handheld actuality (with sound) or handle a CN20 1000m for long lens work.

02

Writing

I've worked with many presenters over the years from nervous new talent to established legends. Presenters include Chris Packham, Heston Blumenthal, Steve Backshall, Jay Rayner and of course, Sir David (lucky me!)
